In April 2019,Paul S.Weiss,an outstanding professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,UCLA,was invited to Hebei University for an academic exchange. After the exchange, the author was assigned as an escort interpreter of Professor Weiss and accompanied him to visit a few famous scenic spots in Baoding, namely, the governor's office of Zhili, the Ancient Lotus Pond, the Han Tombs in Mancheng and Baiyangdian. This practice report selects the most typical content of Baiyangdian tour to analyze. The report is divided into four chapters: Chapter One is task description, which introduces the task background, guide interpreting, task requirements and significance of this interpreting practice.Chapter Two presents interpreting process, which is divided into three parts, including pre-task preparation,on-site interpreting and post-task assessment. And the pre-task preparation involves related material collection and glossary building-up.Chapter Three is case analysis, which is composed of three parts. The first part introduces Relevance Theory—the guiding theory for this interpreting practice. The second part sketches three basic concepts of Relevance Theory. The interpreting under the guidance of Relevance Theory is an act of double ostensive-inferential communicative activity involving speaker, interpreter and hearer. On the one hand, the interpreter needs to find the optimal relevance between the utterance and the contextual assumptions, and infers the real intention of the speaker. On the other hand, the interpreter should focus on the cognitive environment of the target hearer to accurately convey the source information and communicative intention to the hearer with the help of corresponding interpreting techniques. The third part tries to elaborate how to deal with the difficulties in the process of interpreting through flexible use of various interpreting techniques under the guidance of Relevance Theory.Specifically,it deeply analyzes the application process, causes and actual effects of various interpreting techniques in typical cases from the perspective of Relevance Theory. These interpreting skills include Shift of perspective,Combination,Explanation and the clever use of non-linguistic context.Chapter Four is the conclusion. The author summarizes the experience and enlightenment she acquired from the interpreting practice and some improvement strategies for the deficiencies exposed in this practice, which is expected to provide guidance for future interpreting learning and practice so as to make further progress.
