After the July 7 incident in 1937,Yenching University in Peiping was faced with the choice of whether to close down,relocate,accept enslavement or run a school freely.This paper focuses on how Yenching University used its political resources and spatial strategies to maintain the normal operation of the university,so that its purpose of running a school and its faculty and students were protected in its essence.The essence of Yenching University,namely to serve the society as the main purpose,throughout the history of Yenching University;Especially during the isolated island period(1937-1941),the preservation of this book by the Japanese army showed the significance of the existence of the university campus.The selection of Yenching University as the research object is based on the historical remains of this university,including a complete campus space,namely Yenyuan.These memories solidified into words are important texts to restore the appearance of campus life,as well as the main basis to reflect students' sense of spiritual identity to Yenching.The essence of Yenching University,that is,to serve the society as the main purpose,throughout the history of the University;Especially in the Solitary-Island Period,the preservation of this book was more and more significant because of the oppression of the Japanese army.The three places of concern in this paper involve fields in which principals,professors and students are the main participants,but these places do not exclude other groups.In fact,the "owner" of these three places often decides the use limit of the space according to the need.The isolated island period of the Yenching University campus is not a monolithic block,only walls and gates can not completely block out the Japanese puppet agents,can completely resist the Japanese puppet invasion of the place only foreign professor housing,in addition to the daily teaching and interaction between teachers and students,it is natural to become a shelter for the progress of student activities in an unusual period;During the island period,the young teacher Hou Jen-chih,as the representative of the ideological road exploration,completed the transition from Christian thinking to dialectical materialism.Linhu Xuan is the principal's residence,which not only serves as a private residence,but also has the public property of openly entertaining military and political officials,faculty,students and other personnel.Linhu Xuan gradually became the pronoun of the President's words and attitude,and also became the stage to show the legitimacy of campus existence to the Japanese army.The island pavilion is located in the living area of the boys' dormitory.Its basement used to be the practice base of the consumption cooperative of the economic department.This daily life serves as a soft shield from underground workers.In the "isolated island" of Weiming Lake,it is inevitable to be alienated from the world.It is this temporary "distance" that enables people to have a dialogue with the world around them,from which poetry and thoughts are born.From the perspective of space use,the study on the key role of the Yenching University campus in the Solitary-Island Period in the practice of school-running philosophy is helpful to prompt the coping strategies that can be adopted in the university campus in the unusual period,and is also a discussion on the issue of "meaning of university".
