This report takes the sixth chapter and the seventh chapter of the book A Student's Introduction to English Grammar as the source text, which has not been translated from English to Chinese yet.The primary readers of this book,as Rodney Huddleston and Geoffrey K.Pullum, who wrote the book, aimed at,are not professionals who are adept in grammar and linguistics. The chosen text introduces adjectives, adverbs and prepositions with numerous vivid and useful examples. The purpose of this report is to record the translation process and summary techniques adopted in translation practice so that this report could be of help to the same kind of translation in the future.Non-literary translation includes the translation of a grammar book, which necessitates plenty of preparation work before translation.Throughout the process of translation, the translation difficulties at word level and sentence level are marked, and they are solved by following techniques: omission, which is applied to articles, conjunctions, and pronoun;amplification, like adding necessary plural concept and adding omitted part of the original;annotation, which is used to the translation of terminologies;conversion. In the aspect of long sentences, cutting and restructuring are two translation techniques. The related cases are listed and analyzed in the report. The revision after translation is also adopted to avoid errors and omission. Finally, this report summarizes the characteristics of grammar translation, clarifies the specific functions of machines in the early translation preparation and the later translation process, and demonstrates the main contents that translator is responsible for in the post-translation editing. In addition,it also reflects on the shortcomings of this translation.
