According to Information Theory in translation studies, translation is the process of transferring the information in the source text(ST)to the target text(TT).In the process of translation, the translator should decide whether to recreate the original text based on the information equivalence of the ST and TT.By applying the approaches of amplification and omission, the reader of the ST can get similar reading experience as the reader of the TT.In social science texts, report is an extremely important way for governments and organizations at all levels to deliver information to the public. The English reports are characterized by standard and understandable language, strong logic, formal style, technical terms and so on,based on which this paper studies the application of amplification and omission in English-Chinese translation. The study of amplification is made from the perspectives of semantics, grammar and pragmatics, with the first covering the amplification of nouns and verbs, the second involving the amplification of the plural, tense and conjunction, and the third including the amplification of subject and object. And the study of omission is carried out from the perspectives of pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions, with the first covering the omission of personal pronouns and possessive pronouns, the second involving the omission of coordinating conjunctions, causal conjunctions and temporal conjunctions, and the third including the omission of time prepositions and place prepositions.Through case study and comparative analysis, the paper concludes that in report translation, amplification can be applied to meet the needs of the ST in terms of semantics, grammar and pragmatics, and to supplement some detailed information which is lost in the ST,so as to make the TT more informative and explicative;omission can be employed to improve the TT in terms of semantics, grammar and pragmatics, and to reduce redundant information,so as to ensure the brevity and implicity of the TT and highlight the features of the report texts.
