The requirements of target readers affect the translation purpose, and the translation purpose determines the translation process. Relying on the purpose of translation, the translation activity is developed according to the demands of targets readers. The translator is entrusted by a Chinese care home researcher to translate How to Make Your Care Home Fun for the Chinese elderly. So the translation purpose of this translation material is to provide target readers with the information of care homes as a reference. And the readerships are the Chinese elderly. Hence, the translator should select the Skopos theory as her guidance and choose the appropriate translation strategies on the basis of translation purpose and the specific features of the Chinese elderly during the translation process. The selected material mainly concerns the operation and management, as well as a variety of activities of the care homes. There is a general tendency that the elderly may suffer physiological characteristics including memory deterioration, difficulty in concentrating, weakness in thinking coherence and impaired vision. Due to their long-term social experience and cultural accumulation, the elderly are more accustomed to proverbs in reading and expressing. This is a kind of psychological characteristic of them. Taking all characteristics of target readers into consideration, the translator should make supplements on the information which is difficult to understand on account of differences between China and the West in this translation material, thus to enable target readers to catch the actual meaning of the original text. In addition, the translator should also delete repetitious and redundant information, and then list focal points one by one for target readers to grasp them quickly and precisely. Certain obscure words and particular information which doesn't conform to the reading habits of the elderly after simple literal translation, should be adjusted by means of using simple translation for hard words, implementing proper proverbs and changing font sizes to satisfy the reading requirementsof target readers. Finally, the translator summarizes the profits in the translation practice and deficiencies in the translation process, in the attempt to offer help and guidance for translation practice of this type or relevant types in the future.
