The E-C Translation Report On A Short History Of The Mongols(Chapters 7-8)

This report is an English-Chinese translation report,which carries out terminology management and terminology translation in the last two chapters,namely,Chapters 7-8,of A Short History of the Mongols based on Computer-Aided Translation(CAT)tools.This book,written by the historian George Lane,was published in 2018.It introduces Chinggis Khan's growth experience since his childhood and the rise and fall history after the establishment of Mongol empire.The last two chapters,“Qubilai khan,Yuan Emperor of the World” and “Soup for the Qa'ans” mainly introduce Qublai Khan's military life,the development of the Yuan Dynasty and the rule of successive emperors in the Yuan Dynasty.There are about 19,000 English words in the source text and about 30,000 Chinese characters in the target text.The excerpts are of moderate difficulty.In terms of language features,the text is objective and rigorous.Terminology translation is a major difficulty in this text.There are a large number of different kinds of terms in the text,which are professional and difficult to translate.To solve these problems,this report first collects parallel texts related to Mongolian history,and then combines with CAT tools to carry out terminology management including terminology extraction,bilingual glossary creation,terminology format conversion,TermBase(TB)construction,and terminology recognition,thus ensuring consistency and accuracy of terminology translation in the full text.In view of the difficulties in terminology translation,this report first classifies terminology into three categories,namely,personal names,place names and cultural nouns.Then,according to the translation principles put forward by predecessors,three translation principles are summarized based on the characteristics of the terminology in this text,namely,the principles of accuracy,conventionality and moderate information compensation.Finally,the translation methods of terminology are discussed.This report adopts the translation methods of literal translation,transliteration,semantic translation,and adding in-text annotation and footnotes with reference to Mongolian historical materials.Through this translation practice report,the application of CAT tools for terminology management can significantly improve efficiency and quality of terminology translation in Mongolian historical works.Meanwhile,with the help of the principles and methods of translating Mongolian historical terms in this report,the importance of terminology standardization in the translation of historical works is emphasized.
