A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Craft For A Dry Lake (Chapter 22-28)

This is an E-C translation report based on the translation practice of Craft for a Dry Lake.This book is a memoir,mainly about what Australian writer and artist Kim Mahood saw and heard in the northern part of the Australian Aboriginal community where she lived as a child again after her father's unfortunate death.Under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory,the author summarizes the experience of this translation practice in terms of translation difficulties and methods from the aspects of lexicon,syntax and style.Australian literature containing unique culture and national customs,is more and more popular with Chinese readers.At present,there are few theoretical works on Australian literary translation,so the translation of Australian literary texts can promote the cultural exchange between China and Australia.Nida's functional equivalence theory,based on the principle of equivalence effect,emphasizes that the relationship between the target reader and the translation is basically the same as that between the original text and the reader.In the report,in order to reach this translation standard,in view of the difficulties at lexical level,including the translation of the connotative meaning of words and function words,the annotation method and conversion of part of speech are adopted respectively.At syntactic level,the main translation difficulties are the translation of sentences' logical sequence and long sentences.The author uses sequence inversion and structure recast to solve these problems.At stylistic level,the translation difficulties summed up by the author are translation of figures of speech and how to keep the original language features.The author combines literal translation with free translation and context translation respectively to ensure the functional equivalence between the translation and the original text.This translation practice provides Australian literature lovers with relevantinformation on aboriginal culture for reference.In addition,the translation guidelines and methods involved in the report can provide some reference for scholars engaged in translation in this field.
