A Report On The E-C Translation Of Moon Village Association Under The Text Type Theory

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the Moon Village Association,a science section on an astronomy website.The task is entrusted by Beijing Moze International Culture Development Co.,Ltd.The translator is responsible for the translation of the Technology and Science,two parts in this section.The commissioner proposes some requirements for the rendition.First,the translation must be accurate,faithful and fluent.Second,the rendering must match the style of the source text.Third,the target text must satisfy the expectation of the target reader.According to Reiss' s text type theory,the source text in this task is an informative text with the following language features.First,there are abundant terminology and compound words,which enables a professional,plain and efficient communication of information.Second,passive and complex sentences are ubiquitous,strengthening the objectivity and logic.Besides,reference and conjunction,as two cohesive devices,are frequently used to achieve the coherence.The report consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the background and significance of the research.The second chapter analyzes the text type and language features of the source text.The third chapter describes the work in the pre-translation,translation,and post-translation stages.The fourth chapter illustrates the translation strategies and techniques at the lexical level,the syntactic level,and the textual level.The final chapter summarizes the experience and limitations of the translation.The translator proposes the following translation methods to deal with the translation difficulties.Terminology could be rendered in a standardized way or further explained by annotation.Compound words could be translated through class shifts to ensure the smooth flow of information.Additionally,passive sentences in English could be converted into the active voice to adapt to the habits of the target language.Complex sentences describing historical events could be restructured according to the time sequence.At the textual level,omission and explicitation could be adopted to improve the coherence of the target text.
