The English Curriculum for Chinese Primary School and Junior Middle Schools in 2011 states briefly that primary school students are required to learn and know how to use 600-700 words.Therefore,the present situation of vocabulary teaching in English classroom in primary school is still far from satisfaction.Lots of students easily get bored with the learning and find it hard to keep the words in their mind,no matter how hard they try to memorize new words.The combination of song teaching and English teaching is one of the current directions of innovation and reform of English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.In primary school English teaching,songs plays an indispensable role.There are some studies on English vocabulary teaching with English Songs and chants as instruction for college students,junior high school students.However,it has an important value on primary English vocabulary teaching that combined with English songs and chants to conduct research and development of primary school English vocabulary teaching models.Enlightened by Krashen's Input Hypothesis,Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory,this thesis presents the experimental research that investigated whether the application of song-aided instruction would help to improve primary school students' English vocabulary scores or not,and investigate what is the attitude of primary school teachers' towards English songs and chants aided English vocabulary teaching.This paper draws on relevant research from home and abroad,which aims to study the application of English songs and chants aided instruction on the vocabulary teaching in primary schools and answer the following two questions:1.Can English songs and chants aided English vocabulary teaching improve the pupils' vocabulary score?2.What is the attitude of primary school English teachers towards using English songs and chants to assist English vocabulary teaching?Experimental method and interview method are used in this study.Four classes students of the Central Primary School of Wugong Township in Yining County,in Grade 4(197 in total)were chosen to participate in a 14-week experimental research by a pretest,the final examination of last semester.They were randomly chosen to serve as the experimental classes and the control classes.Students in the experimental classes learned the target words under song-aided instruction while students in the control class were required to recite the words,after being taught the word pronunciation,spelling and meaning.After the experiment,all the students had to attend a post-test.Having post-test is in order to find out whether students' vocabulary scores could be improve with English songs and chants aided instruction in vocabulary teaching.Meanwhile,in order to find out what's the primary school teachers' attitude towards song-aided instruction in English vocabulary teaching,therefore,five primary English teachers are chosen randomly in Yining county to have an interview after the experiment.The data of tests were analyzed with independent samples t-test and the data of the interviewwere analyzed and presented with tables and figures.The results show that:1.English songs and chants aided English vocabulary teaching can improve the Pupils' Vocabulary Score.2.Primary school English teachers believed that primary school English vocabulary teaching aided by songs and chants is worth advocating and could be widely used.The results above further verify the effectiveness of English songs and chants aided English vocabulary Teaching for primary school students to improve their vocabulary scores.Therefore,it is of positive significance to carry out English songs and chants aided English vocabulary teaching in primary school English teaching.In the end,some pedagogical implications and suggestions are given based on the teaching and experimental process as well as the results of the study.Teachers should create a relaxing and interesting atmosphere as well as a contextualized environment and provide various types of activities for students in vocabulary class.Students are willing to participate in vocabulary learning and review the words after class if they are motivated.Their confidence and self-consciousness in vocabulary learning should be cultivated and sustained by varied teaching activities.This study provides reference for later study and reference for further research and promotion of English songs and chants aided English vocabulary teaching,so that later researchers can better discuss and study in depth,so as to better improve students' vocabulary scores.
