A good learning environment and an easy learning process play an important role in stimulating students' learning interest and improving classroom efficiency.It is the key point in English learning to cultivate listening and speaking skills,and to use the language to communicate.However,limited by the environment of education and traditional teaching methods,it is always difficult to let students learn English happily.As a primary school English teacher,in order to find effective teaching methods which are suitable for junior grades of primary school,I explore the Total Physical Response(TPR)method based on second language acquisition theory,left and right brain division theory,and memory trace theory.It is a method that can help students learn a second language quickly and efficiently in a relaxed and pleasant environment,and it has a certain role in stimulating interest and improving listening and speaking skills.I apply it to English teaching in junior grades of primary school,and use action study to verify the advantages of TPR and solve problems in the application process to better exert its effectiveness.This study is carried out for a 15-week action study in two classes of the first grade(Class 6 and Class 8)of Shanghai P Primary School both taught by myself.And Class 6 is the experimental class,which is used TPR for teaching,while Class 8 is the comparative class,using the traditional teaching method.Questionnaires and interviews are taken to know the current status of the use of TPR by collecting data.Then designing and implementing two rounds of actions to analyze and explore.With the method of classroom observation and experiment,I try to solve the following two questions:(1)How does TPR affect students ' acdemic interest and academic performance?(2)How can TPR be effectively applied to English teaching in junior grades of primary school? Through data comparison and observation analysis,this thesis concludes after two rounds of action study: TPR is a more suitable English teaching method for junior grades of primary school students.Compared with the traditional teaching method,TPR creates a more relaxed learning atmosphere,which is easy to stimulate students' interest in learning,and it can help to make the abstract language become more concrete,which can effectively help students quickly understand and internalize knowledge.And students' memory of knowledge is more durable.At the same time,it significantly improves the listening and speaking ability of students,so that students can communicate in English more bravely.Combining the problems of action study and teaching practice,I propose strategies and suggestions for more effective use of TPR,in order to provide new ideas for front-line English teachers,so that students can learn English efficiently and improve their pragmatic ability in a stress-free environment.
