In October 2019,David Lynch won the Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award.The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized Lynch’s many years of art practice.The award also made many Lynch fans around the world make up for their regrets for many years.Lynch began to contact with films in 1967.From the short films at the beginning to the long films at the end,he showed unusual charm in the film world.His films often have Lynch’s unique style,which is what people call Lynch doctrine.Compared with other independent directors of the same era in the United States,Lynch’s works show the following unique characteristics:First,in terms of material selection,there are many small things in life,just like our daily life.Housewives,lovers,neighbors and partners,these ordinary people entered the film and television screen,with a strong sense of substitution.Second,in terms of film form,director Lynch has tried many innovations,including black——and——white films and color films from the perspective of color classification;animated films and reality films from the perspective of production type;long films and short films from the perspective of time length;linear narrative and complex narrative types from the perspective of narrative structure.Third,in terms of style,diversity and hybridity can often see the shadow of other works in a movie.Lynch often uses some of his favorite elements in the movie,such as the red wavy screen,the blue lightning,the white smoke,the burning flame and so on.Lynch’s films will also be interspersed with other movie segments.The plot motif will be very similar,and many other scene details will be extended from one inspiration.Therefore,Lynch’s long films sometimes are very long,because of the bursting and extension of inspiration.Fourth,in terms of artistic form,Lynch is very keen on exploring the new situation.There are not only the real representation of the scene with documentary like long lens,but also the strange clips of the author’s films,various novelphotographic angles and narrative perspectives.He is also very keen on experimental exploration.Even if the audience and others are not optimistic about it,it will not affect his curiosity and the pace of exploration.The early stage of David Lynch’s film is full of experimental atmosphere and weird and horrible color.It’s not a peaceful straight——line narrative,but a kind of alien that makes people think hard and hold their breath at the beginning.From his early exploration in the creation of short films to the mature narrative of long films,he gradually developed his unique film aesthetics — — Lynch doctrine.This is the focus of this paper,that is,the characteristics and artistic style of David Lynch’s films.
