The Translation Of Parenthesis In English Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

The historical development of the United States has been accompanied by its geographical expansion.Ellen Churchill Semple was an American female geographer who made outstanding contributions to the development of geography subject in the early period of the United States.The material of this translation report comes from her first scholarly work,American History and Its Geographic Conditions which was published in 1903.This book has been widely read as a textbook for American students who major in geography or history,and is of great reference significance for Chinese scholars who want to learn more about the development process of American history and geography.However,up to now,there has no any published Chinese versions of this book.Based on language functions and according to the content and literary forms,Peter Newmark divided all texts into three types:“expressive text”,“informative text” and “vocative text”.Then he proposed two translation strategies for different text types,namely“semantic translation” and “communicative translation”.Expressive text usually adopts semantic translation strategy,while informational text and calling text usually adopts communicative translation strategy.The book American History and Its Geographic Conditions is widely used as a college textbook,so it is an information text.Therefore,the author will conduct this translation practice under the guidance of communicative translation theory.This translation practice report consists of six parts.The first part is the description of the translation task,which introduces the background and significance of the translation task.The second part is the task process,including preparation,translation process and proofreading.The third part is the introduction of the theory applied in the process oftranslation,which briefly introduces the communicative translation theory and its application in translation.The fourth part is an overview of the English parenthesis,including its definition,classification and pragmatic functions.The fifth part is the analysis of translation examples.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,combined with the cases,the author proposes six specific methods for the translation of parenthesis,which are preposition,subsumption,liner interpretation,adding words,translating parenthesis in a racket and keeping of the punctuation mark respectively.The sixth part is the summary of the translation practice.
