Guo Moruo,a famous writer and historian in China,was born in Shawan District,Leshan City,Sichuan Province.As the hometown of Guo Moruo,Leshan has a wealth of historical data that can provide a guarantee for the study of Guo Moruo's life.Translating the literature researched by Guo Moruo into English can enhance academic communication in the research of Guo Moruo's culture at home and abroad,and also play a role in the culture and international exchange of Guo Moruo in the future.The translator was commissioned by the Sichuan Guo Moruo Research Center to undertake the academic work of the director of the center,Professor Liao Jiuming,Different Reasons for Abandoning Medicine,Different Way for Literature--A Comparative Study on Lu Xun and Guo Moruo's Abandoning Medicine for Literature,with more than 18,000 words.Based on Newmark's textual function theory,this report explores the key points,difficulties,methods and the strategies of academic work translation.This practice report consists of five parts.Part one is to collect the life of Mr.Guo Moruo and the background of this academic work research according to the specific requirements of the client.Guo Moruo chose to abandon doctors for medical education because of several factors such as education environment,reading habits,physiological factors,and background of the times.It shows the research significance of academic translation.The second part is a general description of the translation process such as pre-translation preparation,translation process,and post-translation matters.The third part is the elaboration of translation theory.This part introduces the main views of Newmark's textual function theory in detail,and proposes strategies and methods for the translation of academic works.The fourth part is a case study of translation.This part is the core of this practice report.Based on the basic viewpoint of textual function theory,the source text contains informative function and expressive function.According to the stylistic of the text,the translator enumerates the nine types of translation difficulties from three aspects: lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level.Combining specific examples,the author proposes translation strategies and methods.The last part is the summary,which summarizes the translation practice from three aspects: the translator's experience,the problems and shortcomings of academic translation,and the inspiration and suggestions for future studies of the translator.Through this translation practice,the translator learned about the characteristics of academic works,the translation methods and strategies of the academic works.Even though the translator gained experience in this translation practice,some problems and deficiencies were still discovered.Rethinking translating this type of academic works,can help the translator do better in such academic translation work.
