At present,educational reform emphasizes the importance of students' all-around development,of which the development of their core competencies is one of the most essential constituents.Among all the subject core competencies,English core competencies play a very important role in students' all-around development,which include linguistic competence,learning abilities,thinking quality and cultural awareness.Cooperative learning is a practical and innovative teaching theory and strategy.According to the New Curriculum Standards,cooperative learning should be widely used in teaching,so as to further implement the curriculum reform,and realize the cultivation of students' core competencies in English.The author combines cooperative learning from the perspective of English core competencies with junior high school English reading and tries to explore a new teaching mode of English reading.This paper firstly introduces the definition and theoretical basis of cooperative learning and English reading teaching,then designs experiments aiming at answering the following three questions: 1.Can cooperative learning under the guidance of subject core competencies effectively improve students' reading ability and promote students' reading performance? 2.How to implement cooperative learning in reading class to meet the requirements of English core competencies? 3.How to improve students' interest and enthusiasm through cooperative learning based on the core competencies in English learning? The author conducts questionnaires,interviews and tests for the two classes.The experimental class adopts cooperative learning method while the control class adopts traditional English reading teaching.It is believed that the combination of cooperative learning and junior high school English reading class can help to activate students' interest in English learning,improve students' reading ability and effectively alleviate students' anxiety about reading comprehension.It can also guide and cultivate students to learn to use reading strategies to achieve self-improvement and cultivate students' core competencies.The author believes that the cooperative learning model is feasible to be applied in junior high school English reading class,and it can effectively improve students' English reading ability,which also meet the requirements of the core competencies.The author will conduct more in-depth research and practice in the future and apply cooperative learning model to reading teaching.
