Translation Strategies Of Noun Clauses From The Perspective Of Hypotaxis And Parataxis

The translation materials of this translation report are selected from Chapters 7,12 and 25 of John Brockman's book Possible Minds-Twenty-Five Ways of Looking at AI.The book mainly introduces the danger that artificial intelligence may bring to human beings,artificial intelligence and future civilization,etc.The author,Brockman,provides many novel ideas in the book,which are enlightening,entertaining and exciting.The translation text is difficult in content and complicated in structure.In particular,there are a large number of noun clauses.When translating these clauses,the author meets a lot of difficulties of how to express the information in the source language accurately and effectively.Therefore,the translation of noun clauses is the main difficulty in the process of completing the project.The emphasis on “hypotaxis” in English and “parataxis” in Chinese is of great guiding significance in the process of translating noun clauses.Therefore,based on the theories of hypotaxis and parataxis,this report analyzes the cases in the book Possible Minds-Twenty-Five Ways of Looking at AI and discusses the translation strategies of noun clauses.This report is divided into five parts.The first part introduces the book,Possible Minds—Twenty-Five Ways of Looking at AI and its author,John Brockman,and discusses the significance of the translation of noun clauses.The second part summarizes the whole task process.The third part introduces hypotaxis and parataxis theory,noun clauses and the relationship between them.The fourth part is the core content of this report.The author summarizes the ways to deal with the connective words and the translation methods of the noun clauses in English-Chinese translation through specific case analyses,such as sentence pattern reconstruction,subject conversion and sentence focus transfer.The fifth part is the conclusion of this report,which mainly summarizes the specific translation theories and the corresponding translation strategies used in the process of translating the noun clauses involved in this project.
