This E-C translation report, under the guidance of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, explores the specific translation methods and techniques during the translation process of the first two chapters in The Cambridge Handbook of Violent Behavior and Aggression. This source text, professional and objective in content and serious and formal in style, aims at providing assistance for studying violent behaviors and popularizing the relevant social psychological knowledge. The target readers are from all walks of life with various reading expectations. Moreover, differences in language use, thought pattern and cultural background between English and Chinese are obvious and huge as well.Given these above features, this report applies one of the important theories of pragmatics, namely,Adaptation Theory,to illustrate the translation process of the source text from such angles as contextual correlates adaptability(communicative context and linguistic context),structural objects of adaptability(lexical and syntactic levels),dynamics of adaptability and salience. At last, this report draws a conclusion that translation is a dynamic communicative process in which the translator must comply with related principles and give full play to the subjectivity to make multiple choices and adaptation by taking such elements into consideration as language habit, cognitive ability, emotional expectation and cultural background, and by using appropriate translation methods and techniques, such as literal translation, free translation, annotation, conversion, semantic extension and sentence structure transformation. This report further demonstrates that Adaptation Theory is of great guiding significance to the translation of the informative text and also guides the application of related translation methods and techniques in practice.
