Conceptual Metaphor Translation From The Perspective Of Domestication And Foreignization

Popular science translation is an important phenomenon in the fourth wave of translation in China.The research on popular science translation theory,however,has not been paid enough attention domestically and is relatively weaker in the theoretical system of translation studies.Meanwhile,popular science works are also featured by literariness,interestingness,scientificity and popularity,accordingly bringing numerous difficulties to the author of this report.The translation material is excerpted from The Science of Getting Started written by Patrick King.As a popular science text,the source text is both scientifically rigorous and linguistically humorous.In the translation process,the author of this report has found a variety of conceptual metaphors characterized by their implicity and cultural property,thus leading to several barriers in translation.The author of this report should adopt proper translation strategies to precisely and fully convey the information in the source text.Besides,cultural connotations and linguistic habits should also be taken into consideration for a natural reading experience to the target language readers.Domestication and foreignization,respectively target language-oriented translation strategy and source language-oriented translation strategy,aim to explore effective translation techniques by dealing with the cultural differences.Therefore,domestication and foreignization are taken as the theoretical guidance.The author of this report analyzes the structural metaphors,orientational metaphors and ontological metaphors to discuss the psychological and cultural factors based on which metaphors arise and employs six translation techniques such as reservation of metaphorical image,transfer of metaphorical image,adding of metaphorical image,abandonment of metaphorical image,translation of metaphor by similie and use of Chinese four-character.This report presents the translation process,difficulties encountered in translation and their solutions,for the sake of providing reference methods for the conceptual metaphor translation and offering examples for the translation of popular science text.
