Applying The Strategies Of Domestication And Foreignization To The Translation Of Social Science Texts

Writings in social sciences touch upon a wide range of subjects which also manifest themselves in a variety of textual forms.The thesis presents an article in social sciences with its translation as well as comments on the strategies adopted in the process of translation in the analysis section.The questions of how to approach the translation of social science texts and whether it is truly a distinct field of translation are the two major questions the academia have been asking and arguing for quite some time.Translation of social science texts certainly poses quite a challenge to a prospective translator,as the most significant characteristic of social science writing is at the same time the source of major translational conundrums encountered in the process of translation.For,if we come to view social science texts as positioned on the bridge of technical and literary writings,we must acknowledge that,as such,they borrow heavily from both of these genres but also,that they are subject to boundaries these two are limited by.Thus,when translating social science,we cannot merely focus on looking for the correct counterpart of terminology in the target language,nor can we lose ourselves to the overly literary style,sacrificing at the same time the clarity,objectivity and logic the social science text embodies.As it shall be exemplified in the present paper,the two strategies proposed by Lawrence Venuti in Translator’s Invisibility,i.e.,the domestication and foreignization strategies appear to be useful and effective in the translation of social science texts.
