A Translation Project Report On A Woman's Place(Chapter One To Chapter Three)

The thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation based on the first three chapters of the novel entitled A Woman's Place written by Lynn Austin from America.In this book,the author describes four women with diverse backgrounds who responded to the call of the state to work in Stockton Shipyard,making their own contributions,and finally found their own value in life during World War II.Austin described the psychological activities of the characters in the book in detail,vividly showing the complicated inner activities of the heroines,which was fascinating.And the translator hopes that her translation ability can be improved through this translation practice,which can offer some implications for the research of feminine literature as well.In this translation practice,the translator needs to read carefully,ruminating the details of the book so as to realize the real intention of the writer due to the large amount of psychological descriptions and dialogues of characters in the original text.Given the features of the original text and the language,the Functional Equivalence Theory by Eugene Nida is adopted as the theoretical basis to guide translation practice,and the translator also combines practical translation techniques and methods,including addition,subtraction and four-character structure so as to avoid the problems of translationese as much as possible.The difficulty encountered during the translation process mainly lies in how to reproduce the original language style and convey the inner world of the characters in the book with vivid language.And how to make the target readers get the same reading experience as the original readers is highly challenging for the translator.Through this translation practice,the translator has obtained a deeper understanding of the theory of Functional Equivalence.At the same time,she truly realizes that in literary translation,not only the content of the source text and the intention of the author should be conveyed,but the inner activities of the characters of the original text should be restored,which requires the translator to have a solid foundation in Chinese and to polish thetranslation repeatedly.Only in this way can a satisfactory translation be completed.
