A Report On The E-C Translation Of F396P Aircraft Tow Tractor Operation Manual(Excerpts)-Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

Since the reform and opening-up,China's civil aviation industry has surged up,followed by a sharp increase in the domestic demand for airport ground equipment.As one of the special vehicles,the aircraft tow tractor has been widely needed for airports.Due to the late start of the Chinese tow tractor industry and the inexperience of the vehicle operator,translating the tractor operation manual truly satisfies the practical needs.This report is based on the E-C translation of F396 P Aircraft Tractor Operation Manual issued by its German manufacturer,Goldhofer.Considering the objectivity,logic,and professionalism of the scientific and technical text,this translation practice takes the Skopos Theory as guidance and explores the optimal Skopos-guided translation strategies of the operation manual through horizontally comparing the author's draft translation and the Skopos-guided translation,to achieve the accurate translation of the operation manual.With specific examples,in this report,the author discusses the difficulties encountered in translation such as nominal structures,functional words,imperative sentences,passive sentences at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.Besides,she also focuses on illustrating the Skopos-guided selection of translation strategies and methods such as verbal conversion,amplification,omission,and repetition.The Skopos-guided translation provided by this report will help aircraft tow tractor practitioners improve their operation skills,and boost the domestic aircraft tow tractor industry.Meanwhile,the translation strategies and methods of the operation manual summarized in this report hope to offer references to the mechanical translation practice and research.
