As the largest colonial country in modern times,Britain once expanded its territory to all over the world.Alfred Caldecott,a British historian, made an objective analysis of the British colonial expansion in his book English Colonization and Empire, which is of great significance for the study on the British history and its remarkable influence on the history of the world. This translation task is excerpted from the second and twelfth chapters of the book,in which the writer makes a detailed comparison between Britain and other colonial empires,as well as briefly summarizes the problems presented in its colonial process. There are five chapters in this paper. The first chapter introduces the background and significance of the translation task. The second chapter is mainly about the analysis of original text from lexical, syntactic and textual levels, and briefly illustrates the requirements of the entrusting party.Chapter three gives a detailed introduction to the translation process, including searching for background information, choices of translation theories and tools, analysis of parallel texts, establishment of translation plans and glossaries before translation and quality control during the translation as well as reflections and summary after translation.Chapter four presents case analysis on the basis of the lexical and grammatical cohesion. The fifth chapter is the conclusion which summarizes the translation skills adopted according to different cohesive devices and the limits of this report.Under the guidance of Textual Cohesion Theory, this report carries out the case study from lexical and grammatical cohesion levels and discusses the application of different cohesive devices in E-C translation as well as points out how the translator deals with the cohesion in the original text.Through this translation practice, the author has a deeper understanding of the history of British colonization and the Textual Cohesion Theory.Based on the analysis of specific cases, the report intends to put forward related translation strategies for different cohesive devices so as to provide references for future study.
