With the development of technology and in-depth communication between nations, there has been an increased demand for non-literary translation, including legal translation, technological translation and medical translation.Such kind of translation involves a great deal of professional terms and unique sentence structure, and thus is a challenge for the translator.Taking the source text The Orchid and The Dandelion as an example,it is a review of a physician-researcher's explorations and findings,in which the author shares his insights drawn from medical practice and experiments. This book has caused widespread concerns in America by giving inspiring ideas about how families, schools and communities can nurture children, which will also be beneficial to Chinese readers if it is introduced into China. And the translator finds it a great challenge to deal with the professional knowledge in the source text.Parallel texts play an important role in improving the translation quality and efficiency of such texts. This translation report first gives a general idea about the source text(ST),defines ST as informative texts;it also provides a literature review of parallel texts(PT),which is defined as,as Prof.Li Changshuan puts it,“all the reference material which involves information relevant to the source text”;then it explains the function of PT with case studies. Finally,it is concluded that 1)for translation preparation, the translator should identify the classification of ST,collect reliable PT and form a bilingual glossary;2)the accurate lexical translation can be assured with the help of authoritative PT;3)appropriate PT can not only function as a model of sentence structure, but also give a deeper understanding of ST,and thus to improve translation efficiency.
