Causes Of And Solutions To The Improper Pauses In English-to-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

The occurrence of improper pauses is a common problem that should be overcome by interpreting learners to become professional interpreters.In order to solve this problem,the author explored the causes of and solutions to improper pauses in English-to-Chinese consecutive interpretation based on the examples of improper pauses in the author's own interpreting by analyzing transcripts,referring to literature and studying cases of improper pauses.Pauses can be divided into proper pauses and improper pauses.This thesis analyzed the causes of two forms of improper causes,including filled pauses and silent pauses.The author then analyzed the causes of improper pauses from the aspects of listening comprehension,note-taking,background knowledge and target language output.The author then discussed the solutions to improper pauses including strengthening listening comprehension,note-taking,background knowledge and expression.This thesis intended to help other interpreters to reduce improper pauses.
