George Washington is one of America's greatest presidents as the founder of the country. However, readers know very little about his early experience nowadays. The book The Indian World of George Washington deals with the early experience of George Washington about how he handled the relationship with the native Indians. The translator selects its Chapter One,Two and Six as the translation material because these chapters mainly concern the early Indian policies of the United States and the tortuous and changeable relationship between George Washington and the Indians, which enables readers to have a more in-depth understanding of the whole country. The source text is a typical biographical text and conveys plenty of historical information. There are so many infinitives in it with different components in sentences and different syntactic functions, which makes it difficult for readers to understand.Based on Katharina Reiss' s Text Typology Theory, the report classifies infinitives in accordance with their different syntactic functions and adopts various translation strategies for translating infinitives, such as division,restructuring,pre-position,with an aim to explore the translation strategies for infinitives in the biographical text, and provide some reference for the translation of the biographical text. This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is a brief introduction to the source text and significance of the task;Chapter Two concerns the process of translation tasks;Chapter Three mainly demonstrates the theoretical framework, including the overseas and domestic research of Reiss' s Text Typology Theory, syntactic functions of the infinitive and characteristics of biographical texts;Chapter Four concentrates on case study, illustrating the translation strategies for infinitives functioning differently in sentences, including division, restructuring, inversion and pre-position,from the perspective of Reiss' s Text Typology Theory;Chapter Five summarizes the whole report and the translator's achievements and shortcomings in the process of translation.
