Impact Of Preparetion On Interpreters' Performance In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting And Possible Solutions

Interpreting is a highly demanding cross-language and cross-culture avtivity.In consecutive interpreting,interpreters are required to understand the speaker,take notes,and deliver accurate information in target language in limited time.In real practice,interpreting activities involve both general and specific fields and industries.For those interpreters who have just graduated without much experience,related terminologies and concepts might create difficulties for them.Therefore,interpreters need to have a basic understanding about the target field and industry before the task.Especially when the speaker is a famous scholar,preparation plays a very important role.This thesis is based on the mock conference of “International Order and American Power”,at which the author is responsible for the interpreting of the senond part of the speech.This thesis first introduces the definition and importance of preparation.Then the case introduction and the author's preparation are presented.In the third chapter,the thesis analyzes the positive impact of preparation on the case performance and the problems caused by lack of preparation.Since the speaker is a famous scholar who has made many other similar speeches,the author could have made more preparation to avoid these problems.At last,possible preparation methods for this kind of task are proposed.For example,in terms of short-term preparation,when the speaker is a distinguished scholar,apart from searching basic information,listening to similar speeches delivered by the speaker in recent years and listing the contents that are frequently mentioned are of great help.In terms of long-term preparation,interpreters should be ready to acquire new knowledge at any time.It is beneficial for interpreters to accumulate hot words on a regular basis and organize information of different countries.
