A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Stars Are Fire(Excerpts)

The translation report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the first six chapters of the translation material The Stars Are Fire,a novel written by the American writer Anita Shreve.It is a story about the big fire attacking the citizens in Maine in 1947 during which the protagonist Grace Holland changed from a submissive wife into an independent woman.The novel is characteristic of its vivid presentation of Grace's rich inner world,ranging from her depression caused by the marriage,helplessness and fear in face of the fire to the struggle for happiness.The literary language,dialogues and monologues relevant to Grace's emotional changes create translation difficulties.The translation report mainly demonstrates how the translator attempts to solve these translation difficulties by adopting appropriate translation strategies under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory.In dealing with the literary language,the techniques of semantic extension,four-character structure,division,reconstructing are applied to ensure the fluency and intelligibility of the translated text,to achieve adaptation to the structural objects of the target language.In the translation of dialogues and monologues,the translator not only employs amplification,omission,colloquialism,cohesion to make the translation more coherent and logical,but also utilizes addition of modal particles and adverbs to interpret characters' emotions,aiming to achieve adaptation to the context of the source text.And the report discovers that the adaptation techniques are feasible and effective in rendering literary language and context in translating the novel,and this translation practice is of certain value to the translation of the similar text type.
