The Application Of Communicative Theory Of Terminology To The Translation Of Metaphorical Terms In The Chinese Translation Of Teaching Unplugged: Dogme In English Language Teaching

When completing the translation project of Teaching Unplugged: Dogme in English Language Teaching,the author of this thesis drew on the communicative theory of terminology to analyze and translate the metaphorical ELT terms in the source text in such a way as to facilitate their intuitive understanding by Chinese foreign language teaching practitioners.The present project-based thesis reports that research-translation process.The author uses the communicative theory of terminology to view the metaphorical terms in the translation project.In light of the contextual view of the communicative theory of terminology,the researcher analyzes how the Chinese translations of the metaphorical terms in the researched translation project could fit into the socio-cultural context,the situational context and the co-text they are in.The subjects of analysis in the study are five typical metaphorical terms,namely,“teaching unplugged”,“Dogme ELT”,“grammar Mc Nugget”,“scaffolding”,and“emergent”.Related problems,especially those about the ways to translate new metaphorical terms,to improve existing translations,and to choose appropriate variants of a term,are also discussed by the researcher.The research shows that the contextual view of the communicative theory of terminology could guide translators through the complexities of the translation of metaphorical terms with a set of translation procedures.Nevertheless,due to the limited number of metaphorical terms in the translation project,the procedures may not cover all the situations that translators will encounter in the translation of metaphorical terms.Thus,future research can extend its scope to the translation of metaphorical terms in different discourses and various fields,so as to refine the translation procedures.
