As one mode of thinking, metaphor has played a vital role in enriching human languages. With linguists' further research on languages, the ubiquitous metaphor in human languages has attracted a wide range of scholars' attentions, and then the investigation of metaphor in translation in various discourses has emerged. The book,Studying Scientific Metaphor in Translation: An Inquiry into Cross-Lingual Translation Practices written by British scholar Mark Shuttleworth, introduces the study of metaphor translation in scientific discourse. The translation report is based on the Chapter Three Metaphor and Translation of the book.In the translation practice, the translator found that nominalized structures and long complex sentences are quite common in the source text, which exerts numerous difficulties on translation.According to the functions of nominalization and the structures of long complex sentences, the translator divided the translation difficulties into two types, the translation of abstract nouns and noun phrases with high information density and the translation of sentences with various clauses and sentences with complicated logical relations.Accordingly, the translation methods of conversion, cutting and recasting are employed to resolve these translation problems under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory. This translation report consists of five chapters. The first describes the translation task, including a brief introduction to the book, the author, the content and features of the source text as well as the motivation and significance of the translation practice;the second is the translation process, which includes the preparation work for the translation practice, the analysis of the translation process and the revision of the translation;still next states the application of translation theory, and taking the analysis of the source text and the description of translation problems into consideration, the translator applied Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory;then, case study mainly focuses on the analysis of how to solve the problems resulting from nominalization and long complex sentences, and the last summarizes the translator's reflections on the translation practice and the limitations of this report.
