The Resurgence Of White Nativism

In 2016 presidential election,Donald Trump gained the support of the majority of white Americans,which played an important role in the winning of his election.As it were,it is white people who send Trump to the White House.There are scores of factors for whites to support Trump,such as economic,social,political and secure factors.However,the main cause is the revival of white nativism.This thesis tried to explore the reason for white people's vote for Trump from the perspective of nativism.In recent years,immigration problems have become more and more serious.The increasing racial and religious diversity in America that are caused by immigrants make white people feel America is no longer a country dominated by whites.These whites are concerned about the losing of their racial domination,the replacement of their traditional Christianity,and the erosion of their core white Anglo-Protestant culture.In fact,these concerns are just what white nativists fear,as their central goal is to preserve and restore what they see as “white America”.While presidential candidate Donald Trump' views and campaign proposals are consistent with the central goal of white nativism.So it can be said that those white people who support Trump are white nativists,and 2016 presidential election witnesses the resurgence of white nativism.Through analyzing white people's concerns and some of Trump's campaign proposals,the author of this thesis tended to prove that it is the resurgence of white nativism that drives white people to vote for Trump.This thesis argued its statement through analyzing three aspects of nativism's central goal: preserving racial domination,restoring Christian power and preserving WASP culture.The first chapter will analyze how the demographic change affects white racial domination,and how Trump's immigration proposals appeal to whites to help them preserve racial domination.The second chapter will mainly discuss the threat of Muslim immigrants to American Christianity and national security,while Trump's ban on Muslim immigrants can reduce this threat in certain extent.In the third chapter,the author will explain whites' concern about WASP culture's replacement by multiculture from the aspects of religion,language,white identity.Trump's attitude toward multiculture drives whites' support for him.Through analysis of the reason for white people's vote for Trump from the perspective of white nativism,this thesis could make readers know more about whites' condition in American present days.At the same time,this thesis could provide a certain reference for ethnic studies.
