During presidential election years, the US is understandably more divided than usual, because different candidates, with their own supporters, have different thoughts about how to run the nation. However during the 2016 election,as the least popular presidential candidate in history,Donald Trump made this situation even worse due to his extreme remarks on various topics. The thesis begins with the background of the US before the 2016 Presidential Election. It then moves to the presidential campaign.Donald Trump‘s strategy of bullying, harassing and,at times, humiliating his opponents has proven far more successful than anyone could have predicted. However, this strategy also came with a cost because his extreme remarks made himself very unpopular not only in the Democratic Party, but also in his own Republican Party.A big problem Trump faces since he took office has been the limited goodwill from the opposition party, the Democratic Party,to help him unite the country.Although he is ambitious in making the country great again,he has met a great deal of obstruction from the Democratic Party when passing laws on healthcare, immigration, tax, etc.Apart from the pressure from the opposition party,Trump also faces unprecedented disapproval rate from US citizens for various reasons, especially his racist history. As a melting pot,the United States of America has a population of more than 320 million coming from different parts of the world. Thus it is inevitable to have differences and conflicts in society.According to Gallup survey,77 percent of Americans,a new high, believe the nation is divided after Trump won the election. And according to his performance so far,he is not bringing the country together, but pulling the country even apart.Trump‘s success actually reflects the rise of populism and anti-establishment in the United States of America. The country will continue to move apart if there is no change in the Trump administration. And in that case the country will not trust him again in 2020.
