During the May Fourth period,intellectuals who had broken their faith in "parliamentary politics" and "national omnipotence" began to pay attention to "society",and various social problems were mushroomed.The discussion of social issues has become one of the hot topics in public opinion.The intellectuals,relying on the theoretical tools imported from Europe,America and Japan,analyzed the problems of Chinese society and sought solutions.They wanted to rebuild a new society by solving problems.As an active and well-known intellectual during the May 4th movement,Shen Dingyi participated in it without exception and formed complex and changeable social reconstruction thoughts.But as time passes,the social reconstruction thoughts of Shen Dingyi have been largely forgotten,even people have different opinions about what kind of person he is.Shen Dingyi was born in an official family with a high starting point.He is optimistic,generous,emotional and compassionate.However,he was born in the turbulent times and witnessed the abolition of the imperial examination system,the outbreak of the revolution of 1911,the development of the new culture movement and the May 4th movement.All these factors have an important influence on the formation of his social reconstruction thoughts.Shen Dingyi has a short life,but he went through the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China.This is the period when the traditional order has completely broken and the new order has not established.The Revolution of 1911,the New Culture movement,the May 4th movement,and other events broke out continuously during this period.They had a major impact on China at the time and thereafter.Anarchism,Marxism,Three People's Principles and other theories are prevailing too.Doctrine and revolution are the key words of this era.And Shen Dingyi,as a member of the times background,has inevitably been influenced by it.In fact,the various ideas of social reconstruction can also find the theoretical source in Anarchism,Marxism and Three People's Principles.In terms of the specific content of social reconstruction,Shen Dingyi regarded the education problem,women's problem,workers' problem and farmers' problem as the objects that need to be reformed.And he regarded young students,the union of workers,farmers and soldiers,and party organizations as forces that can be relied on in the process of social reconstruction.In the social reconstruction path,he thought “the fragmentary solution” and “the total solution” were useful.But in the end,he changed from “to the revolution”,which advocated the overthrow of the existing economic system and class system,to “to the reform” of opposing class struggle.By comparing with the contemporary figures,it is not hard to find that Shen Dingyi's social reconstruction thoughts have the characteristics of changing with the times,being diversified and complex,and paying attention to farmers.At the same time,it is not hard to find the defect of falling into the vicious circle of reformism and deviating from the people by placing this thought under the perspective of Marxism.
