Reports And Image Construction Of Chinese Immigrants By Three Major Newspapers In Greece From 2008 To 2018

This paper mainly studies the image construction of Chinese immigrants by the Greek media.Through the reports on the immigration of Chinese immigrants from the three major newspapers in Greece from 2008 to 2018,the characteristics of the reports of the Greek media on Chinese migrants in Greece are described and analyzed.The theoretical basis of this research is the agenda setting theory and framework theory,and the combination of quantitative analysis method and content analysis method is used to carry out this research.With the “Belt and Road” initiative,political,economic and cultural exchanges between China and Greece have become increasingly frequent and in-depth.The number of Chinese immigrants in Greece has also climbed to 20,000 to 30,000.After obtaining 108 valid samples,I conducted quantitative analysis and content analysis on the relevant texts,and found that the Greek media lacked attention to Chinese immigrants.Lengthy reports are far fewer than short reports,and the reports were mainly neutral and negative,and the positive reports accounted for a small proportion.Reports are mostly neutral and negative,positive reports account for only a very small proportion.Relevant reports are mainly concentrated in the fields of law,economy and social life.Reports in the legal field are almost all negative reports on illegal immigration,illegal trade and participation in illegal social activities.The Chinese groups targeted by relevant reports are mainly middle-class people represented by Chinese businessmen,followed by Chinese immigrants without obvious divisions.The lower middle class and the under-middle-class immigrants without legal status also account for a small proportion.The reports of the upper middle class are very rare.From the positive,negative and neutral aspects,I analyze the image construction of Chinese immigrants by the three major newspapers in Greece,and sums up different image characteristics such as “small business operators”,“small groups that are difficult to integrate into society”,“competitors of Greek local businessmen”,“social instability factors” and “hardworking and polite immigrants”.These different image characteristics are related to the cultural differences between China and Greece,and on the other hand,the political position of the Greek media.It is also influenced by the factors of society,economy and media.Affected by these factors,the Greek newspapers usually focus on reporting negative news about Chinese immigrants.At the end of the article,I put forward three suggestions to enhance the image of Chinese immigrants and enhance the image of China,wishing to effectively improve the image of Chinese immigrants from the national level,social group level and individual level,wishing to carry out top-level design from the national level to strengthen communication and mutual trust with relevant government departments in Greece,and social groups composed of Chinese immigrants should organize targeted educational and cultural exchange activities to draw closer to the people of the two countries;The level can proceed from the Chinese migrants themselves to overcome the obstacles of intercultural communication.
