As the most important colony in the Far East,the development of Singapore is not going well smoothly.At the beginning of setting up a foreign trade port,the rapid development of commerce has promoted the rapid growth of the city.With the urban layout broken,population grows too fast,Serious imbalance in sex ratio,classes is increasingly differentiated and the contradictions among ethnic groups are intensifying.All of these things bring a new problem to the public security in Singapore.Especially,the rapid increase of the Chinese brings opium,gambling,prostitution and secret society fights,which accelerates the appearance of the public security issues in Singapore.In contrast,lacking the ability and communication channels with Chinese society,the colonial government is incapable of handling the increasingly serious problems of public security.In 1867,Singapore separated itself from the Honourable East India Company and became a crown colony,which brought a favourable turn for the public security of Singapore.From the need of Maintain its own rule,on the basis of ensuring the stability of social order in Singapore,the colonial government adopted a series of public security management measures.Such as,perfecting legislative judicature and public security institutions to enhance the administer of public security,and establishing Chinese protectorate to be responsible for Chinese affairs specially.The Chinese protectorate is an important symbol for the government of social security.Through it,the colonial government has set up a bridge to communicate with Chinese society.Besides,in view of the serious opium,gambling,party and criminal problems,a number of measures has been taken by the colonial government,which finally prevents a series of problems from happening and creates a new social face of Singapore.The management process of Singapore's public security of British colonial government reflects that the government is transferring from indirect management to direct management.The British colonial government's governance of Singapore's public security in nineteenth Century also left an important legacy for later generations.
