Cyberspace has been universally regarded as "the fifth space" beyond sea, land, air and outer space. In order to acquire the enormous information resources contained in cyberspace, countries are striving to shift the focus of information collection to the Internet.Cyber spying as well as the threats it poses to Internet security have invoked widespread attention among countries. As a result, the traditional "anti-espionage" operations are no longer restrained in a certain geographical area.Cyberspace has become an important frontier to prevent and counter hostile espionage.Cyber counter-intelligence has thus came into being and gained huge momentum of development. As the world's major intelligence powers are making considerable progress in both theoretical research and practical experiences on cyber counter-intelligence,China,which is undergoing a military restructuring with the role of intelligence being upgraded, should take the lead in making achievements in this newly-emerged and increasingly important intelligence domain. On the one hand,China's intelligence agencies are practicing cyber counter-intelligence work through such initiatives as “cyber attack and defense” operations. One the other hand, cyber counter-intelligence is a field almost forgotten by the academic community. This state completely runs counter to the important role of cyber counter-intelligence.Proceeding from this judgment, this thesis takes cyber counter-intelligence as its subject of research and tries to probe into those fundamental issues concerning it.The thesis has discussed the definition, the status and role, components, and characteristics of cyber counter-intelligence,and put forward suggestions on how to strengthen cyber counter-intelligence capabilities of China's military.
