In the 21 st century,depression is becoming a major mental risk factor affecting peoples' health.In recent years,depressive tendency which is derived from depression gets more and more public attention.The rate of detected depression among college students is high,which makes them a major concern of academic research.With high expectations of society and parents,College students have a strong desire for self-achievement.But their psychological development is not mature yet.The object of this study is to focus on the depression tendency of university students,and to explore how the online social relations influence their depressive tendencies.Based on the study designed by Hong Kong Baptist University,we collected data from 743 college students in Nanjing,learning basically about their personal and educational background.We have additionally measured their online social relations and depression tendencies.The study found that gender,as a critical factors in those previous studies,have also played an important role for somatic depressive tendencies of college students,but was not significant for the general depressive part.It is not the most affective one among all the factors.In the educational factors,the level of school has different indicative function on depressive tendency.After the inclusion of other factors,it only has a significant impact on somatization of depression.Meanwhile,the location of schools makes difference on depressive tendencies,especially cognitive-emotional terms.But after correlating with other factors,the affect is no longer evident.In this paper,under the background of previous studies' results,we discuss how the online social relations affect the college students' depressive tendencies.According to the research on the theories of social support and online social support,the study put forward the hypothesis that the online relationship has a negative effect on depression tendency.This paper promote a new framework with seven models by dividing the depressive tendency into somatic and cognitive.Results of this study show that,for the relationship maintained through the Internet,contact with the family presents great influence on the depression tendency,especially on the cognitive-emotional side.For the individual online relations,whether people have net-pals or the number of female net-pal have effect on the depression tendency.For the community of social relations,whether the students browse the forums including the number of entertainment browsing have a significant impact on cognitional-emotional items.The study found that,in the network of social relationships,for people who have friends on the internet,the more quantity they have met with their female online friends,the more contacting their families by network will get less depression.And students who browsed online forums will get less depression.However,the higher frequency of browsing entertainment items will make people depressed more.In this way,under the guidance of the social support theory,we need to have a right sight on online social relations as an interactive social communication networks,which is constructed so as not to damage the real social relations.We attach importance to the online social relations,as while as complementing the role of social networks,guarding against the behavior of over-reliance and addiction on the network.We'd better help students get effective online social support,inhibit depression tendency to ease relations and solve a series of problems which are caused by lacking of resources and relations.
