Since the reform and opening up,the Chinese economy has maintained a long-term rapid growth and achieved remarkable achievements. In 2005,China's GDP surpassed Japan to become the second largest economy in the world.Although China's economic aggregate has leapt to the second place in the world, there is still a large gap between the quality of economic development and developed countries. At present, the Chinese economy is facing many structural contradictions. The most prominent problem is that the economy has long relied on import, export, and investment, and the role of consumption in economic development has not been fully highlighted.Since the outbreak of the international financial crisis in 2008,the global economy has continued to slump and the recovery has been sluggish. The major economies in the world have been affected and affected by the financial crisis to varying degrees, and China is no exception.Against this backdrop,China,as a large open country, has been markedly curbed by foreign trade, with exports falling sharply and external demand being sluggish. Therefore, the Chinese government has been taking various positive policy measures to expand domestic demand, especially consumer demand,in order to resist the impact of the financial crisis and maintain steady and healthy economic development. As the main body of consumption of a country, the population's influence on consumption is extremely important. This paper mainly studies the influence of population factors on residents' consumption from the perspective of population age structure.First,on the basis of summarizing and summarizing related population theory and consumption theory, this paper analyzes the mechanism of the influence of population age structure on China's resident consumption.Second,it describes and analyzes the age structure of the Chinese population and the current status and trends of urban and rural residents' consumption. Then the dynamic panel data of 31 provincial administrative regions in China from 1991 to 2014 were selected for empirical analysis and robustness test.Empirical analysis was used to analyze the impact of population age structure on urban and rural residents' consumption. The results show that: First, the relationship between children's dependency ratio and household consumption changes in the same direction, and the trend of this same direction changes with the continuous development of the economy.Second, the ratio of old-aged dependency is opposite to that of household consumption. The relationship of changing, and this trend of reverse change with the continuous development of the economy has been enhanced;Third, the moderate growth of the population has a positive role in promoting consumer spending. Finally, based on the findings of the research institute, corresponding policy recommendations are proposed.
