The cultivation and promotion of college students' scientific research ability is a systematic project,which has received universal attention from universities at China and abroad.In terms of the cultivation of scientific research capacity of university students in China,there are mainly two types of extracurricular activities,ie classroom instruction,graduation thesis(design),Academic reports,seminars,etc.;extracurricular classes are all kinds of scientific research competitions,academic activities,etc.From the actual development of the cultivation of scientific research ability of college students,extracurricular research competition activities have demonstrated vitality.They have played an important role in broadening the channels for university students to participate in scientific research and promoting students to develop rigorous research attitudes.One of the most influential and most radiant ones is the "Challenge Cup" competition.The"Challenge Cup" is a top-down college student research competition sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the provincial government and widely participated by colleges and universities.Since its inauguration in 1989,there have been nearly 30 years of development history.The theme of its activities has been continuously enriched,the scale of competition has been continuously expanded,and more and more colleges and students have participated.From the beginning,there were only 300 participants.By 2017,there are more than 2 million students participating in more than 2,000 colleges in China.It can be said that the "Challenge Cup" is the most important form of extracurricular research competition activities for college students.Taking the "Challenge Cup" as a case study of research competition activities and the improvement of students' abilities is typical.This research uses an empirical analysis to conduct questionnaires and interviews with college students who have participated in the "Challenge Cup" competition in the past five years.The survey results show that participating in the "Challenge Cup" can promote the improvement of the scientific research ability of university students;participate in the "Challenge Cup" can raise the enthusiasm of student's scientific research;participate in the "Challenge Cup" can enhance the management experience of team leader.From the perspective of specific scientific research capabilities,the most significant aspects of enhancing the scientific research capability of university students through the "Challenge Cup" competition activities are the ability to think independently,the ability to observe and collect data,the ability to orally communicate the results of research projects,and the ability to communicate;more prominent Aspects areability to write papers,ability to design an experiment or theoretical test of thehypothesis,ability to design problem investigations based on assumptions,ability to reformulate your original research hypothesis,ability to statistically analyze data,ability to interpret data by relating results to the originalhypothesis,understand the importance of "controls" in research,the ability to write a research paper for publication,and the ability to relate results to the "bigger picture"in yourfield;The least significant improvement in capacity isthe ability to execute and umake use of the primary scientific research literaturein your field.The ability to identify a specific question for investigation basedon the research in your field,to understand contemporary concepts in your field,and to formulatea research hypothesis based on a specificquestion.In order to glance at the leopards,the problems in the "Challenge Cup" competition deeply reflect the problems existing in the scientific research competition among college students to improve their scientific research capabilities.This study attempts to summarize the issues.From the national level,there are problems of unreasonable evaluation system and inadequate policy publicity;From the perspective of universities,there are issues such as the introduction of "Challenge Cup" and the incorporation of utilitarian factors,insufficient funding support for universities in competitions,lack of institutional constraints in the evaluation of school works,and insufficient attention to the cultivation of students' scientific research ability in universities.From the perspective of teachers,there is a low level of enthusiasm among instructors and and that the teacher is eager for immediate success;From the student level,there are issues such as the impractical purpose of the competition,the general lack of communication skills and essay writing skills,the shortage of professional knowledge,long competition period and diminished enthusiasm of team members.In view of the existing problems,this article proposes the following strategies to promote the scientific research ability of university students through scientific competition:The state should standardize policy guidance and improve the evaluation system;Universities should increase support for the "Challenge Cup";teachers should seize the shortcomings of scientific research,and strive to develop students' communication skills and thesis writing skills;students should persist and maintain their initial enthusiasm.
