Mathematics learning disability(MD)refers to the phenomenon that children with normal intelligence lag behind the average level of others in the same age or same grade in mathematics learning because of the deficiency of mathematics learning ability.As Mathematics,which is structural,systematic,and logical,is one of the major disciplines in the school education,the Children with MD not only have difficulties in school,but also face great challenges in life and can hinder their development of other abilities.According to a large number of studies,the causes of MD are complex,and may be due to genetic factors,living conditions,personal cognitive ability and so on.Based on the three primary cognitive abilities: verbal working memory,visuospatial working memory,and attentional inhibition,this study develops the educational experiment combining the author's daily mathematics teaching work with group counselling.In this study,the quasi-experimental design with unequal experimental-control groups pre-and post-test controls was used.The 24 subjects with MD were selected through the discrepancy criterion from the two classes of the fourth-grade in the primary school in the urban area of Kunming and were divided into 2 groups.The experimental group with 12 students was offered with group counselling during one month;The other group with 12 students as control group does not participate in the group counselling.The test results of the three tasks: Corsi Block,Backward Digit Span and Stroop were used as indicators of cognitive ability.Through comparison of pretest and posttest data,the effectiveness of group counselling at school to improve the way of learning mathematics of students with MD was verified.The experiment selected the group counselling program designed by the researcher to train students' ability of verbal working memory?visuospatial working memory and attention inhibition.The results showed:1.The verbal working memory span of the children with MD have been significantly improved through the group counselling.This has a certain relationship with the use of memory strategies;2.The visuospatial working memory of the children with MD has not changed better after the experiment;3.The attention inhibition ability of the children with MD has not been significantly enhanced through the group counselling.In summary,it is showed that the group counselling and individual counselling at school to improve the cognitive abilities of children with MD are feasible,so it is worthwhile to study and practice.
