The continuous innovation of technology and digitization makes information literacy become a necessary skill in contemporary era.To deal with the information explosion,most of countries work on improving the information literacy level of college students and make the information literacy education system perfect in colleges and universities.In order to cultivate talents in the information age and help college graduates obtain the necessary information literacy,more and more countries have incorporated information literacy education into their own education systems.The United Kingdom has been widely acknowledged as a powerful and strong country in higher education,which has accumulated rich experience in the process of training students' information literacy and has formed its own education characteristics.This paper adopts literature research method,comparative research method and case analysis method to study following questions: First,what is the background of the development of information literacy education for British college students?Second,what are the contents and characteristics of information literacy standards issued by the UK? What are the principles? What agencies are responsible for cultivating the information literacy of college students? And what kind of ways to cultivate the level of information literacy ? Thirdly,this paper selects Cardiff University as an outstanding representative of information literacy education in the Wales to study its system of information literacy education.Fourth,what are the characteristics and shortcomings of information literacy education? And what experience and inspiration can we get from the process of cultivating students' information literacy in the UK?For the above issues,this paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction.This paper introduces the background of the thesis,combs the research status of the information literacy of British college students at home andabroad,and defines the core concept.The second chapter analyzes the influence of the development of British culture,economy and colleges and universities on the cultivation of information literacy of college students.The third chapter focuses on the system of cultivation of student information literacy in British universities and colleges.It mainly analyzes four aspects: information literacy standards,education principles,relevant institutions,and training methods.In the fourth chapter,the case study method is used to deeply discuss the student information literacy education system in Cardiff University.It analyses the development background,theoretical framework,responsible institutions,and teaching methods,then summarizes the characteristics of information literacy education in Cardiff University.The fifth chapter is the conclusion.Firstly,it summarizes the characteristics and existing deficiencies of the cultivation of information literacy among British college students,and then summarizes the enlightenment of the cultivation of information literacy of British college students from both macroscopic and microscopic levels on the basis of the status in China.
