Throughout all ages, sketching is of great value in fine art education. As practical teaching activities, sketching courses are important parts of fine art courses of elementary and secondary schools and play a very important role in improving elementary and secondary school students' fine art quality and facilitating today's education transformation.Faced with changes in education environment of 21 st century, educators should make corresponding improvements to sketching teaching models. However, some fine art teachers don't have a full understanding of objectives of sketching courses. Thus, technique training still dominates sketching courses, leading to dissatisfactory results.Undoubtedly, they fail to cultivate students' skills of 21 st century. In this paper, the goal of sketching courses, namely developing students' skills of 21 st century, was determined through theoretical research and interpretation of meaning and development of sketching and sketching requirements in class schedules of each country.Current conditions and problems of sketching teaching activities of China's elementary and secondary schools were analyzed through review of sketching cases in fine art textbooks and sketching teaching activity cases as well as questionnaire interviews for students and teachers. At last, based on domestic and foreign excellent sketching cases and teaching ideas, three courses were independently developed from the perspectives of psychology,post-modern curriculum theories and culture & science. In addition, two of these three courses were verified,in order to facilitate progress of the study of integrating skills of 21 st century into sketching courses.
