Among researchers,study skills – especially for math – continues to be a hot topic.In recent years,some researchers have investigated the differences between high school students in the humanities course versus the sciences course,holding that with regards to math study skills,these students exhibit notable differences;however,there are also scholars that believe gender can influence math study skills.Currently,however,there is inadequate research that deals directly with how gender influences math study skills,especially when one considers gender paired with other important differences,such as whether a male or female student is in the humanities or sciences course,or whether a male or female student is from an urban or rural home.Such research is particularly needed relating to Guangxi top-tier high schools,especially regarding sophomore.According to an analysis of survey data regarding study skills,Guangxi top-tier high schools' sophomore' basic circumstances are as follows:(1)Regarding gender,when it comes to the three principle dimensions,there are no obvious gender differences.However,when it comes to the minor dimensions of self-reflection and the ability to personally regulate one's study habits and state of mind,male students' level of control is shown to be superior to that of female students.(2)Regarding the separation of students into the humanities course and the sciences course,when it comes to the three principle dimensions,there are no obvious differences.However,when it comes to the minor dimension of seeking external help,sciences students' ability is shown to be superior to that of humanities students.(3)Regarding students from urban and rural areas,when it comes to the three principle dimensions,there are no obvious differences.However,when it comes to the minor dimensions of attention to detail and seeking external help,rural students' abilities are shown to be superior to that of urban students(4)Regarding gender and the assignment into the humanities course and sciences course,the four resulting groups(male/humanities,male/sciences,female/humanities,female/sciences)do not have any notable differences when it comes to the three principal dimensions.However,when comparing each group pairwise,some of these groups do show some differences when it comes to the five minor dimensions.(5)Regarding gender and whether a student comes from a urban or rural home,the resulting four groups(male/rural,male/urban,female/rural,female/urban)show no notable differences when it comes to the three principal dimensions.However,when comparing these groups pairwise,there are notable differences in three of the five minor dimensions,including the ability to seek external help.When this data was analyzed in conjunction with another survey on openness,some reasons behind the differences in different students is revealed,including: differences between the humanities course and the sciences course;the male/female gender ratio in the ranked sections of a given grade level;personality differences in in male and female students;and the level of pressure and general home environment a student grew up in.Altogether,these factors constitute the differences in math study skills among sophomore in Guangxi top-tier high schools.Additionally,this paper proposes some suggestions for improvement with the aim to: help humanities course and sciences course students complement each other's strengths;help male and female students complement each other's strengths;help manage urban and rural students' differences;help students to manage internal and external influences on their studies;and help provide accurate help to students.
