With teaching Chinese as a second language(TCASL)getting more and more popular in the world,Chinese language has been playing a very important role in many countries and regions,different cultural backgrounds of different countries offered very huge prospect of Chinese teaching,which has formed into a global and various teaching system with more and more Chinese teachers and students.There are currently a lot of study on the TCASL in New Zealand,and a lack of the study based on the situation of a high school,which also proved how representative and creative this kind of study is.Based on New Zealand new high school test system NCEA,this thesis aims at presenting an impact that this education evolution has brought,to do so,a study on NCEA itself and its Chinese teaching part was found.The Chinese teaching of WHHS has formed into a steady model of teaching.This thesis will use research method such as literature research method,observation method,questionnaire survey and so on.I will also discuss and research on the model of Chinese teaching of Western Heights High School to explore the model's advantage and features.I hope this thesis can provide some referential opinions and suggestions on Chinese teaching for other high schools in New Zealand and even the schools in other countries,and for global Chinese language teachers as well.I have been taking part in every Chinese class at the Confucius Classroom of WHHS during last year,recording and analysing some of the selected classes to find out the teaching principles such as “focusing on students”,“teaching both languages and cultures” and “paying attention to students' learning ability and interest”.Meanwhile,I evaluated teachers' teaching method,students' learning progress and the teaching achievement to conclude the development of the Confucius Classroom of WHHS in recent years.I also put forward my wishes at the end of the thesis after analysing the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching method.There is not many study based on individual cases now existing in the field of TCSL,I sincerely hope this thesis could be a reference to all the TCSL teachers worldwide.
