Talent training is one of the significant functions of higher educational institutes.To improve the quality of education is the focus of the institutes in the late phase of higher education popularization and to encourage students to participate in research has an important impact on improving the education quality of independent colleges.The more students participate in research activities,the more they see about their own cognitive level and social ability.To participate in research is a good opportunity for students to accumulate learning experiences and discover their own interests and potentials,which has an important influence on their' own development.Therefore,participants in research cannot be confined to the students of some research-led universities,nor to specific outstanding students.Independent colleges should formulate different plans in line with individual characteristics of students and their future development,guiding actively students to participate in research.According to the education orientation of independent college,the scope of research,in which independent college students participate,mainly refers to applied technology development,education and teaching research in this study,in addition to fundamental research of a certain level.This study explores the situation on students' participation in research through adopting multiple methods,such as document analysis,questionnaire and interview and taking four independent colleges of Hebei Province as research subjects.Based on the data gathered via questionnaire survey and the information obtained through interview,it was found that the students have a obscure cognition of research,a low overall participation rate and a lack of research ability and that those universities attach insufficient attention to students' participation in research.Meanwhile,the course of research methods has not been widely offered.Courses available exert little impact on the improvement of students' research ability.The teaching of research methods is inadequate and monotonous;Students have little knowledge on how to access Chinese and foreign electronic literature.According to the above-stated findings,this study also find out the problems on independent college students' participation in research as well as the reasons thereof.Major problems consists in four aspects.The first one rests with students' perception of research;the second lies in the opportunity for students to participate in research;the third is concerned about the resources for students to participate in research;the fourth is the demand of the students for participating in research.According to these problems,reasons were analyzed.The reasons can be attributed to students' biased cognition of research and low motivation to participate in research,teachers' lack of motivation to guide students to participate in research,and the imperfect system of research management.In view of the causes for these problems,this thesis proposes countermeasures,i.e.,popularizing fundamental knowledge on research,improving outmoded concepts,developing university-enterprise cooperation,expanding the scope of opportunities for students' participation in research,improving rules and regulations on research,ensuring research resources,setting up incentive mechanism and stimulating research motivation.Measures and methods for improving research methods and approaches are also proposed in order to improve the participation rate of independent college students in scientific research and make research serve the development of students.
