A Comparative Study On The Difficulty Of The Content Of "Function" Between The PEP Editionand The BNU Edition

As a significant curriculum resource in the compulsory education stage,textbooks play an important role on supporting education and teaching.Textbook evaluation has been a key part of optimizing teaching quality and deepening the new course reform.The textbooks of the PEP edition and the BNU edition are two versions of the textbooks that are widely used in China,and they have a great effect.Although they are written according to the curriculum standards,the difficulty is not the same.Therefore,it is necessary to have a comparative study about the difficulty of those two versions.In this paper,the content of the"function"in the middle school stage of those two versions?the PEP edition and the BNU edition?is taken as the object of study.And it selects the mathematics difficulty model revised by Bao Jiansheng in 2014 to solve the calculating of the difficulty levels of exercises in the course difficulty model established by Shi Ningzhong in 2013.In this way,this paper combines the two typical models established by Shi Ningzhong and Bao Jiansheng,and has a in-depth and meticulous comparative research in the course difficulty of the content related to"function"in those two versions,which includes four aspects:the course duration,breadth,depth and difficulty of the exercises.Besides,it performs analysis based on the curriculum criterion.Through the research,this paper has the following main conclusions:?1?In terms of the course duration,T BNU edition<T curriculum standard<T PEP edition.The PEP version has the longest course time,but its knowledge points related to the“Function”is more compact.It is more beneficial for students to integrate the original and existing knowledge in a comprehensive and systematic way,but students will have too much learning pressure at this stage.As for BNU version,the course time is the shortest,but the knowledge points are evenly distributed throughout the junior high school period,which helps students to consolidate and strengthen the knowledge points in spiraling difficulty levels.?2?In terms of the breadth of the course,G curriculum standard<G PEP edition<G BNU edition.The breadth of the curriculum related to"function"in junior middle school is basically the same in the two versions of textbooks.The breadth of the BNU edition is slightly larger than that of the PEP edition.Both textbooks emphasize the natural connection between knowledge points and real life,and attach importance to the cultivation of students'mathematical thought?mathematical modeling,number-shape combination?through the"function"teaching.In addition,compared with the"Course Standards",the knowledge points involved in the PEP edition and the BNU edition are more extensive than those required by the teaching objectives in the curriculum standard,which indicates that the textbooks put forward higher requirements for students on the basis of the"Course Standards".?3?In terms of the curriculum depth,S PEPedition<S curriculum standard<S BNU edition.The PEP edition textbooks have the smallest depth,and focus on consolidating students'core knowledge and basic knowledge.The BNU edition has the greatest depth,pays more attention to the cultivation of students'application ability and inquiry ability.And it shows high requirements on"emotional attitude and value goal".?4?As for the difficulty level of exercises,X PEPedition<X curriculum standard<X BNU edition.The two pentagons in the radar chart show obvious right convex trends,which indicates that the textbooks pay more and more attention to the cultivation of analytical ability and inquiry ability.In addition,the difficulty level of the"background"in the exercises related to"functions"is both at the medium level in those two versions,indicating that the curriculum reform has indeed achieved significant practical effects,and the life orientation and enjoyment of the exercises in math textbooks have been gradually improved.?5?In terms of the course difficulty,N curriculum standard<N PEP edition<N BNU edition.For comparable breadth,both textbooks have been strengthened on the basis of curriculum standard,which means that both textbooks require students to master more knowledge points in unit time.As for comparable depth,the PEP edition corresponds well with the curriculum standard,and the BNU edition has the greatest comparable depth.The key to this result is that there are wide gaps between the curriculum depth of BNU edition and that of the curriculum standard.In general,the curriculum difficulty level of those two versions is higher than that of the curriculum standard.Based on the conclusions and analysis above,this paper proposes the following suggestions:firstly,The compilation of textbooks should be committed to a higher goal of students'development,and raise more appropriate requirements on teachers'teaching quality,teaching ability and teaching effect in terms of"emotional attitude and value goal".It's supposed to reasonably adjust the reference periods of some knowledge points,and add exercises with the background of"personal life".Secondly,in the exercise teaching,we should pay attention to the stratified practice and get students improved step by step.As new-epoch teachers,we should lead students to carry out independent,cooperative and inquiry learning,and develop and utilize the textbooks appropriately.
