Anxiety is an emotional state that people often suffer from stress, and it is an adaptive response to challenges, difficulties and dangers.Due to the rapid changes and fierce competition in modern society, more and more people suffer from the negative effects of anxiety, and the resulting mental health problems have aroused attention of researchers. Many studies on anxiety measurement tools and related psychological variables provide a theoretical framework for the study of anxiety intervention. Some studies have pointed that anxiety comes from one's unreasonable cognition and is shown through inappropriate cognitive stereotypes and negative automatic thoughts.Other studies have found that anxiety is influenced by factors such as personality traits and emotional regulation.Using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, this study focuses on the three aspects of anxiety symptoms, cognitive patterns and negative automatic thoughts, and investigate the effect of group intervention for college students' anxiety. The subjects were first year students from a university in Hangzhou,a random sample of 341 people was tested for anxiety self-rating scale, and 16 students who had high anxiety scores and volunteered to participate in group intervention were given 120 minutes of group counselling each day for seven consecutive days as two experimental groups.Another 16 people with high anxiety scores were selected as two control groups without any intervention. The study used anxiety self-rating scale,state-trait anxiety scale, automatic thoughts questionnaire and meta-worry questionnaire to examine the effect of group counselling on the improvement of anxiety in the experimental group. The results are as follows:(1)The anxiety symptoms, state anxiety and trait anxiety in the two experimental groups are significantly improved, especially in respect of anxiety mood and neuropathic anxiety.(2)The negative automatic thinking and the frequency of meta-worry are significantly reduced.(3)The effect of group intervention has certain stability to the improvement of anxiety symptoms, state anxiety, trait anxiety, negative automatic thoughts and meta-worry frequency. Therefore,on the one hand, this study confirms that the group intervention model of cognitive orientation can improve or alleviate the negative feelings of anxiety individuals by changing the negative automatic thoughts and inappropriate cognitive stereotypes. On the other hand,it also reveals the role of group interaction in establishing individual's new cognitive and behavioral patterns. In addition, this study provides a paradigm for the design of group counselling programs for other psychological problems.
