The national central city is the economic, political and cultural center of a country and even the world, shouldering the heavy responsibility of national development and international competition. The construction of a national central city in the central and western regions is of great significance to improving the current imbalance of regional economic development in China. On the basis of studying the theory of national central cities and urban competitiveness, and combining the actual situation of economic development in the central and western regions, the article refers to a large number of literatures, establishes corresponding index systems, adopts quantitative analysis methods, collects the panel data of five cities from 2012 to 2017 according to the selected indicators, and uses the entropy weight TOPSIS method,CRITIC-gray comprehensive evaluation method and gray correlation method to evaluate the individual competitiveness and comprehensive competitiveness of these five cities. In the end,the article draws the comprehensive scores and rankings of the five cities in Wuhan,Zhengzhou,Chongqing,Chengdu, and Xi'an,as well as the scores and rankings of each individual indicator, and studies the trend of urban competitiveness scores based on time changes. The results show that the scores and rankings of individual competitiveness calculated by different methods are different, but the difference is not significant,so it needs to be roughly described.Taking 2017 as an example,in terms of economic competitiveness,Chongqing is at the upstream level,Chengdu is at the middle and upper level,Wuhan is at the middle level,Xi'an and Zhengzhou are at the middle and lower level. In terms of opening up competitiveness,Chongqing,Chengdu and Wuhan are stronger,Xi'an and Zhengzhou are weak.In terms of space radiation competitiveness,Chongqing is at the upstream level,Wuhan is at the middle and upper level,Chengdu is at the middle level,Zhengzhou and Xi'an are at the end level, and Zhengzhou is slightly better than Xi'an.In terms of cultural innovation competitiveness,Chongqing is stronger,Wuhan and Xi'an are second,Chengdu is at the middle and lower level, and Zhengzhou is the weakest. In terms of social service capabilities,Chengdu ranks first,Chongqing is second,Wuhan is at the middle level,Zhengzhou is at the middle and lower level, and Xi'an is at the lower level. In terms of eco-environmental competitiveness,Xi'an ranks first,Chengdu,Wuhan, and Chongqing are at a medium level and the difference is not significant,Zhengzhou is the worst. In terms of comprehensive competitiveness of cities, the three methods have different competitiveness scores, but the rankings are consistent, and the rankings of cities have remained unchanged for six consecutive years. The order is followed by Chongqing,Chengdu,Wuhan,Xi'an and Zhengzhou. Finally,on the basis of analyzing the empirical results, the paper discusses the respective competitive advantages and disadvantages of the five central and western countries' central cities, and puts forward relevant recommendations in order to improve the comprehensive competitiveness of the five cities, play their role in the radiation of urban agglomerations, and seek new ways of economic development in the central and western regions.
