| Mr.Juan Antonio Samaranch once said: "Culture is an intrinsic element of the Olympic Games.Without a lively,visible cultural program that reflects the spirit of the host country,the Olympic Games would be incomplete." It is because of cultural activities that always go hand in hand with the Olympic Games that it is easier for the values embodied in the Olympic Games to work their effect.From Barcelona to Sydney,Athens and so on,host cities see the Olympic Games as a platform to display their respective culture and art,exchange with other cultures in the world,promote the Games and build up their national image.In recent years,domestic major sports events have also paid increasing attention to organizing cultural activities before and after the competitions to promote the events,warm up the atmosphere and engage the general public.Sports events are no longer limited to competitions only,but have become a combination of sports competitions and cultural activities – the latter is no less important than the former,and is an important vehicle to promote the spirit of the sports event.These cultural activities are designed to demonstrate the cultural concepts of the host city/country,effectively build up the Games atmosphere,promote the cultural connotation of the event and the cultural characteristics of the host city/country.With the rapid development of China’s economy,the sports-themed cultural industry in China is also rapidly growing and maturing on the whole.As we are preparing for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games – the second Olympic Games to visit Beijing,the Olympic cultural program,as an important promoter of the event,is also being planned and rolled out.The top consideration is how to make the Beijing 2022 another great success by drawing experience from Beijing 2008.Based on the author’s work experience in the cultural program of Beijing 2008,this paper discusses the interaction between the Olympic Games and its cultural program,summarizes the valuable experience of Beijing 2008 in this regard and its inspirations for Beijing 2022,and puts forward the theoretical basis for the sustainable development of the Games.The conclusions are as below:(1)The cultural activities before and during the Games should be carefully paced.At key moments of the whole Games cycle,cultural activities play a vital role in boosting the Games influence,and communicating the overall image of the host city and the culture f the host country.Most of the cultural activities should be staged between six months and three months to the opening of the Games,to create a strong festive atmosphere and raise public awareness of the Games.(2)These cultural activities should feature a great variety of forms,high-quality performance,and distinct national characteristics.As a gala for cultural exchanges,Olympic cultural activities must reach a certain scale without any compromise of quality.It is imperative to concentrate efforts to develop a batch of high-level,high-quality highlight programs,and give them priority in the choice of time and location.(3)Art brands and works are the essence of cultural activities.Olympic cultural activities can showcase the look of the host country/city to the world.Top art brands and works are what draws global attention,thus the most effective means for the host city to maximize the effect of Olympic culture communication,and will bind the Olympic culture with the city culture more closely.(4)Social resources should be integrated while developing cultural programs.For the success of Olympic cultural activities,customized,top-quality cultural programs are a must.It’s also necessary to dig out non-governmental resources and integrate social programs.While keeping the overall pace,we should make sure all the activities are rich in contents,echo with each other and form a complete whole.Meanwhile,outstanding social cultural programs should be added as a supplement to engage the general public.The author also puts forward the following suggestions:(1)The cultural activities of Beijing 2008 have left valuable experience for Beijing 2022 in terms of the organization,contents,subjects,and the way ofpresentation.It may be considered to employ advanced technology to re-present some good ideas that were not adopted or were dismissed due to objective reasons or the time limit during Beijing 2008 after some adjustments.(2)The 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will take place in Beijing and Zhangjiakou,two cities with respective distinct cultural characteristics.Considering that,we can highlight their distinct cultural characteristics,integrate them into the Olympic Movement presentation by either exhibiting local culture or folk customs side by side with international cultures or separately,and develop cultural activities that vary in style but echo with each other in theme.(3)Popular media may be employed to promote the winter Olympic cultural activities.Today,with the surge of me-media,we may consider promoting the Winter Olympic Games through the means favored by young audience,to add a trendy,young flavor to the Games,or using me-media to present Olympic cultural activities to attract more young audience. |
