Over the past three decades, great changes have taken place in China. As the society advances, our country needs "craftsman spirit" and talents for the construction of “Made in China 2025”.Under such circumstances, major selection is such a key part of higher education that it is very necessary to carry out the research on major selection in higher vocational colleges to discover its characteristics and rules, unveil the existing problems, and then optimize the major selection through reform,so as to provide students platforms exerting their potentials and produce the talents meeting the social needs.Based on the follow-up survey on some of the freshmen who are the research targets, this thesis focuses on the major selection of higher vocational college students under the influence of family background, and analyze the influence factor and the major selection results by adoption of the theory of educational sociology. This thesis summarizes the existing problems and explores the causes, then arrives at five points:1.The professional admission rate of higher vocational college students remains in low level and differs between the private colleges and the public ones.Among the 728 students surveyed, the admission rate is not high in the higher vocational colleges.About a quarter of the students' majors are adjusted. In higher vocational schools, students pay close attention to such elements as the popularity of the majors. These points are what they concern the most.2.Parents with different education levels and jobs have different influences on students' major selection. Most of them are the first generation of college students. Most of their parents are engaged in basic and intermediate occupations;these students consider more when they choose a major and are more affected by the family environment;these parents seldom participate in their children's educational activities. This type of student is still influenced by the traditional concept of college major selection when choosing a major.3.Genders and family scale will affect the major selection.Female students are more likely to take family conditions into consideration when choosing majors.Non-one child female students are more cautious in making decisions than those who are born in the one-child family. Therefore, they have less freedom in choosing a profession. In contrast, students of small family size have greater freedom when choosing a major.4.The less important the parent-child relationship and such factors are in professional selection, the more willing parents are to participate their children's educational practices and schemes, which will benefit children in major selection.Parents with related knowledge and willing to participate in slightly complex educational activities will be helpful for students' major selection.5.The low willingness to learn, lack of work enthusiasm and prospects but lost in entertainment, make some high vocational college students short of ambition and hard-working spirit. This is inconsistent with the need for national construction.Based on the above conclusions, universities and governments should actively reform and optimize the mechanism of college major selection to meet the needs of students' pursuing a satisfactory major, and take measures to maintain the balance of college major structure and promote the fairness of major selection.Students should also take the initiative to explore their careers and choose their profession as rationally as possible.
