Research On The Theory Of Gottdiener's Urban Space Political Economics And Its Significance

The political economy of urban space is guided by the political economy theory cornerstone of deep excavation of urban space and the spatial dimension of political economy.It faces a series of problems in urban development directly.It is the theoretical source of Urban Space justice and balanced development.Among them,the most representative are the classical Marxist urbanists and the neo-Marxist school,as well as Mark Gottdiener,the main body of this study.Through the in-depth analysis of Gottdiener's and his predecessors' theories,this paper has keenly noticed that urban space,as the main mode of production of capitalism and the main mode of human existence,has emerged many urban problems with spatial injustice in the process of development,which have greatly hindered the balanced development of urban space and the pursuit of human subjectivity.These problems arise in the process of capital's construction of urban space under the background of space production,and Gottdiener's theory makes the most of the critical path of political economy to criticize space production and capital logic.Gottdiener's theory is deeply influenced by Marxist political economy.He makes extensive use of Marxist political economy's analytical categories of "capital-profit,land-capital,labor-wage" and combines them with the theoretical innovation of David Harvey of the neo-Marxist school,which breaks through the theoretical limitations of the predecessors to a certain extent.From the perspective of spatial political economy,Gottdiener has profoundly highlighted the social,political and humanistic attributes of urban space,and then abstracted the theoretical system based on the "new social space method" and the theoretical framework of economic,political,cultural and other multi-dimensional elements,and highlighted its main driving factors: capital and class,in order to verify the root of urban question,the motive of urban movement,the importance of urban planning and the necessity of urban policy.Generally speaking,Gottdiener's urban spatial political economy holds the critical weapon of Marxist political economy,takes the mode of production as the starting point,responds spatially to the economic,political and cultural issues around the mode of production with its unique capital logic and globalization perspective,but any theory has its historical limitations.Therefore,we must critically examine Gottdiener's theory,affirm his grand vision of incorporating the strengths of all countries from a firm Marxist standpoint,and also pay attention to the theoretical deficiencies due to the insufficient development of the historical situation.As far as China is concerned,At the end of 2018,the urbanization rate of China's permanent population was 59.58%,and the urbanization rate of household registration population was 43.37%.Therefore,this paper attempts to combine Gottdiener's theory with the reality of urban social development in China,hoping to provide some inspiration for the process of urbanization in China,and provide a solid theoretical basis for the construction practice of balanced,sustainable and harmonious development of urban space in China.
