With the continuous development of the "Chinese fever" and the growing size of the Confucius Institute, the Hanban/Confucius Institute has selected many graduate students with certain Chinese teaching and cultural promotion skills to travel to the world as Chinese volunteer teachers.Researching the impact of this particular overseas experience on the development of graduate students has an important practical significance. This study used literature research and interviews to conduct one-on-one in-depth interviews with 16 graduate volunteers from the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand from December 2018 to February 2019.Researching the specific impact on graduate volunteers working and living in New Zealand on their six aspects of developing competence, managing emotions,self-independence,interpersonal relationships, establishing identity and developing purpose.In-depth discussion of the significance and value of overseas experience for graduate development, helping researchers to re-examine and explore the role of overseas experience in graduate development. The results of this study show that overseas experience has a significant positive impact on graduate volunteers. In terms of developing competence, graduate volunteers have improved their teaching practice ability and professional cognitive ability, and have realized the diversification of language ability.Graduate volunteers have improved their emotional processing and realized the external expression of emotions on emotional management. In terms of self-independence,graduate volunteers can master survival skills and are able to self-adjust and adapt. In terms of interpersonal relationships, graduate volunteers have embraced the diversity of communication methods and interpersonal relationships.Overseas experience has promoted graduate volunteers to deepen cultural identity and identity, and to promote their career direction and professional attitude. At the same time, this study found that graduate volunteers have encountered some difficulties in their overseas experience, which is manifested in the fact that the improvement of teaching practice ability and language ability is difficult to be objectively influenced by the subject, psychological and environmental adaptation time is long, basic survival skills are insufficient, interpersonal relationships are in a shallow state and conflicts occur during intercultural communication. This study found out the following factors affecting the development of graduate volunteers by arranging the impact of overseas experience on graduate volunteers: The geo-environment affects the development of the practical ability of postgraduate volunteers, the cultural background affects the development of interpersonal relationships among graduate students, and the weak institutional guarantee mechanism makes the graduate volunteers in an isolated state of environmental adaptation.Graduate volunteers have limited their own development because of their lack of practice and language skills, survival skills and adaptability, and lack of intercultural communication skills. Finally, this study explored the impact of overseas experiences on graduate volunteers and found that overseas experience has a significant effect on graduate students' competence development, emotional management,self-independence,interpersonal relationships,self-identification and goal building.Overseas experience can also be used for reference to the development of graduate students. In order to promote the role of overseas experience,it is necessary to do these followings: relevant units should improve the overseas graduate management system and improve the security system.Graduate students should strengthen their practical and language skills, improve their self-independence and adaptability, and actively build harmonious interpersonal relationships.
